As a young man, he migrated to Albania to attend secondary school, since Albanian-language education was unavailable in Yugoslavia. He studied in Shkodër and Elbasan, where he joined a communist cell and was first exposed to Marxism-Leninism. During fascist Italy's invasion of Albania in 1939, he became active in the resistance movement.
