Delchev was born into a large Bulgarian family in Kukush, then in the Ottoman Empire. He attended Bulgarian Uniate and Exarchate schools, and later the Bulgarian Men's High School of Thessaloniki, where he organized a secret revolutionary brotherhood. Delchev traveled extensively to establish secret revolutionary committees, adopting the nom de guerre Ahil (Achilles).
