Humberto Delgado was a Portuguese General of the Air Force, diplomat, and politician. He is known for being a prominent opponent of the dictatorial Estado Novo regime who contested the 1958 presidential election with great popular support, despite widespread electoral fraud that ensured his defeat. Delgado was assassinated by PIDE agents near the Portugal–Spain border on 13 February 1965.
